Love List 3

time for another friday love list. (so it's technically saturday, does it really matter) no theme per se, just various things that have crossed my path or been part of my experience this week, and have inspired little moments of "ahh" or "aww" or "mmmm".

+ holly's post about her experience in Burma -- beautiful, eloquent, true and heartfelt. if you have a moment, it's really worth taking the time to read.

+ tiny baby lizards sunbathing by my pool

+ my new stripey sweaters! (see previous post: "wishlist") i got the grey one pictured, as well as the same in black. alas it's still too hot to wear them here, but according to my friend it's quite chilly in paris now, and will no doubt be even more so by the time i get there.

+ gemstones, in particular: tanzanite. i'd never heard of this stone before i started making jewelry, but it's a rather rare commodity, which will apparantly be completely mined out within 10 years. the color of the raw stone is a watery lavender, but when polished and cut it has a deep marine blue that rivals sapphires.

+ grown up fairytales -- Laini at GrowWings wrote a brilliant post recommending books for those suffering from harry potter withdrawal, and i've been going through the titles on her list. so far she hasn't steered me wrong.

+ old episodes of star trek (tng) -- i loved the show growing up, and find that it hasn't lost any of it's kooky yet thoughtful charm years later. when i was 13, i thought the character of wesley was the bees knees, but i have outgrown him. i still think jean luc is devastating, but the me of today is oddly drawn to data. maybe there is something restful about the idea of someone who has no emotions. or maybe he's just a cutie.

Wishful Thinking

Wishlist

a few material goods i'm currently coveting:

1. wool & cashmere sweater from J. Crew
so chic! so stripey! so perfect for sipping cappuchino at a sidewalk cafe

2. Bardo pointe-inspired slippers from repetto
to fulfill a lifelong dream of wearing pointe shoes, without the downside of stubbed and bleeding toes

3. Rimowa suitcase in Salsa Prosecco
because i thought my old suitcase was indestructable until Continental Airlines baggage handling proved me wrong

4. A Bit of Paris print from artquirk's etsy boutique
to get me in the mood for my upcoming adventure...

a collection of birds i can see almost daily -- all without ever having to leave my own yard.

Musical Interlude

my new favorite song:

Men Part V: The Classics

my very first celebrity crush was fred astaire.
i was nine. i named my goldfish after him.
maybe people look more magical when they're in black and white, but the men of the silver screen had an aura and allure that just doesn't exist anymore.
i'm not one to moan about how downhill things have come since those "glory days of yore", but i do find that a different vocabulary is needed to describe these leading men.
while "hottie" would suffice for a matt damon or an orlando bloom, the word just wouldn't work for cary grant. for him you need words like "charming" "refined" "glib" and perhaps "jaunty".
and for the fantastic william powell (i would play the nora to his nick anyday) you'd need to resurrect "debonair" "dapper" and "slick".

Men Part IV: Fictional Boys of the 80's

of the 80's, mind you, not in their 80's.

there are many cute ones to choose from.
many would vote for Say Anything's lloyd dobler, he of that classic holding-a-boombox-under-his-girlfriend's-window scene.

and i'll always have a weakness for jake of 16 Candles, because he rolls up the cuffs of his jeans and because that part where samantha sees him waiting for her in front of the church is my absolute favorite moment on film ever.

but if i had to pick just one to take me to the prom (an event, thank god, which i'll never have to relive), my date would be duckie of Pretty in Pink. because duckie is gold and unlike andie i would have the sense to not to ditch him for a wet blanket like "blaine".

Men Part III: Wednesday's Child is Full of Woe

technically it's sunday today, but i'll just pick up where i left off on tuesday.
my man for wednesday is the melancholy Morrissey.
i spent my sophomore year of high school desperately crushing on a boy who was a massive Morrissey fan, and even had people call him by that name.
he once made me a mix tape with this song, which also featured "the sweetest thing" by U2.
an unrequited and unlamented little love.
