rose colored glasses

a spoonful of roses earrings

A new template, a new pair of earrings, a new outlook. Just because.
Um, the heat is starting to get to me. I sat down at my studio desk this morning, pliers and wire in hand, ready to create something pretty...and my brain just said NO, nuh uh. But not as clearly articulated as that -- more like it made the sound that jello makes when you shake it out of its mold -- a kind of dejected floomp sound.

So how does one get through the summer? What do you do to keep yourself feeling slightly perkier than wilted lettuce?
For me, the following provide, if not complete relief, then distraction enough to put a stop to my incessant whining about the heat! the burning! my brain is melting!

4. A Summer Reading List:

There is something about assembling a big reading list and then coming back from the library with a tall, juicy stack of books that just feels like summer vacation to me. Summer reading is meant to be light and fun. My pile consists of chick lit, children's books, travel memoirs, animal stories, and anything whimsical that promises to take me far away.

So far, I've enjoyed:
- The Girl With No Shadow by Joanne Harris (the sequel to Chocolat)
- The Soul of a Horse by Joe Camp (if you own a horse, or ever dream of doing so one day, this should be required reading)
- The Little Lady Agency by Hester Browne (a literary cupcake -- so cute, so sweet)
- The Penderwicks on Gardam Street by Jeanne Birdsall (it feels like a children's' book from a long ago era, but it's brand-new)

And next up on my list is:
A Shepherd's Watch by David Kennard (a James Herriot-esque memoir)

pure shores

I grew up six blocks away from the Pacific Ocean. The sand, the palms, the sun slowly sinking under the water were sights I took for granted. What I miss now are the sounds of the beach. The gulls, the repetitive crash and retreat of the waves, the wind.
Memories of birthday picnics by the pier, tiny cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off, lemonade, cupcakes. Rollerblading in Venice Beach, melting ice cream cones in hand, stopping to try on Indian jewelry or peer in the used book shop.
Always the sunlight, always an impossibly blue sky, and the ocean stretching out to the horizon like a promise of home.

my little sea pony

I've long had a love for sea horses and to my delight they seem to be a popular motif recently. I keep bumping into them while I am bobbing along in the internet ether, almost as though they were seeking me out. They are rather lovely creatures, no?

blue monday

I've been a bit blue the past few days, nothing serious, just a little missing someone who's far away kind of blue. Like so:

Things that have helped revive the inner cheerleader:

1. working on multiple projects at the same time. making new jewelry, writing the third chapter of my next little book, and designing a new site for my friends. hopping from one kind of work to another keeps my mind occupied and flexible.

2. redesigning my blog -- the online equivalent of redecorating my bedroom. playing with a new format, making a new banner and fiddling endlessly with colours and fonts. it's a little schizophrenic how often i like to change it up here; i do get bored easily.

3. losing myself in a fluffy, utterly-relateable novel where the heroine lives out my fantasy of going to grad school at an atmospheric English college.

4. listening to uber-sweet Euro-pop with brilliant lyrics like "Oh no, oh no, you got it all wrong. You think you're chocolate but you're chewing gum".

it's pretty hard to take anything too seriously when you get a song like this stuck in your head. and the pretty colours make me smile (the turquoise segment with the Lolita sunglasses is my favourite):

5. dreaming of new places i'll voyage to next: Vienna? London? ...Texas? after all, the world is my oyster.
