2008 in pictures

The year that was, revisited through photos.
I opted for the polaroid-ed versions of these pictures because the format seems to reflect the feeling that these memories are already consigned to the past, fated to yellow and blur with time. These aren't the best pictures from the year (most of my highlights have already been shared on flickr) but they each hold a kernel of something lovely, something to remember.

Here's to a new year of following lifelong dreams and discovering new ones!

Christmas Treat *5*

Merry Xmas Eve!

The final installment of my xmas treat series is the recipe for these cupcakes, my Grandma Betty's Mayo Cupcakes with Coffee Frosting. They've been a part of my family's history for decades, and through them my grandmother's culinary fame lives on...

Betty's Mayonnaise Cupcakes

Sift together:

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda

Add 1 cup cold water, mix well
Add 1 cup mayonnaise, mix thoroughly
Bake at 350 for 20mins

Coffee Frosting:

1/2 cup butter, creamed thoroughly
Add 1 heaping tsp instant coffee, mix thoroughly
Add powdered sugar and mix
Add a little milk
Keep adding powdered sugar until you have enough frosting to cover the cupcakes
Add 1 tsp vanilla before frosting cupcakes

*Use and enjoy*

Christmas Treats *4*

Today's treat: a lovely free downloadable program called "poladroid".
Take any photo you have, drop it on the cute camera icon, and *presto* a polaroid emerges. Simple, pretty, and totally addicting.

Christmas Treats *3*

Today's treats come via my new favourite online venue: 1000 Markets.

1. Owl in Winter necklace from The Sparrow Fist
2. Snowflakes from Cakebox Cookies
3. Hayley's Tree from colgdrew
4. Pumpkin Ginger Sandwich Cookies from whimsyandspice

Christmas Treats *2*

Today's treat: a somewhat seasonal song I find lovely and heart-lifting. The video has the added bonus of being set to poignant scenes from one of my all-time favorite shows: The West Wing.

Christmas Treats *1*

1. giving, 2. Untitled, 3. tree cookies, 4. scenes from a shopping trip

For this week leading up to Christmas Day, I will post a little daily treat.
Today is a wintry montage from some of my flickr favourites.

You can tell I am wistful for snowy winter wonderlands and also for homemade gingerbread cookies. I had such plans for baking up a storm and sending sweet packages to loved ones, but alas, I am too busy working on an exciting new project...

Californian Holiday {Part One}

Maybe I am biased, but I think my cousins' sunny home in SoCal is one of the nicest places you could possibly ever be.
Each room is a celebration of color and design and the beauty found in small details. Every corner has a visual treat, whether it be a pyramid of vintage cans, a collection of old cameras, a Tiffany lamp glowing softly atop a wooden table crafted by our grandfather in his youth...

The aqua blue kitchen is the heart of the house.

There are always delicious things cooking -- pull up a stool and watch as pears are simmered, French toast is dipped in creamy, cinnamony batter, savory paninis with olives and pesto are grilled, and generous slices of rum cake are topped with great dollops of freshly whipped cream...

The backyard is the domain of a friendly rabbit and a hibernating tortoise, and mysterious faces emerge from behind thriving plants.

The tiling of the master bath is inspired by the bathroom of the house I grew up in -- an old California house full of family memories, which alas is no longer ours -- but this version is a work of art in its own right.

If your creative juices don't get flowing in this airy, quiet, sun-filled art studio, then I fear there is no hope for you.

Art deco elegance. A room to dream in.

Don't you want to curl up for a long, dishy chat?

The library is ideal for reading late into the night, with spooky old portraits gazing down at you while the moon peeks in through the window.

In addition to all the good eating it hosts, the dining area doubles as a game table where fierce competitions of Scrabble and Shanghai are waged. Sassy cocktails are often on hand to lend inspiration.

What I couldn't quite capture on film is that warm sense of home-ness that wraps you like a down comforter when you step through the door. The very walls seem to smile at you, invite you in and take care of you.
I hope you all have a place that makes you feel like that.

I went to California...

... and came back with an obsession with crate labels. This first one might be my favourite -- it's simple but looks amazing against my wall.

The genie is pretty fabulous, although he is certainly holding those oranges at an unnatural and awkward angle. But the landscape looks just like what I drove through on my way up to Northern CA.

The McCurdy pears were my first purchase and responsible for starting me on this label-buying binge. Isn't there something so perfect and satisfying about the typeface and colours? At the time they were made, these were just, you know, advertising labels, and yet there is so much beauty and attention to detail. I can't quite put my finger on exactly why I love these so much, but maybe there is a nostalgia for a golden era I never experienced mixed in there.

Stay tuned for a massive photologue of my trip to California coming soon.
